DEAL DONE: Alabama lands UNC-Charlotte transfer DB Kameron Howard

The former St. Frances Academy (MD) will have three years of eligibility remaining

Kalen DeBoer and the rest of the Alabama football coaching staff have landed another transfer portal target.

UNC-Charlotte defensive back Kameron Howard announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide via Twitter/X on Monday afternoon.

The 5-foot-11, 189-pounder entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal on Saturday, according to a tweet.

Howard, a former St. Frances Academy (MD) standout, played in all 12 games with two starts as a true freshman. He totaled 38 tackles with 0.5 tackles-for-loss and one pass break-up. He also registered two interceptions, which came in back-to-back games (his first two collegiate starts).

Howard has three years of eligibility remaining. He received several FBS offers out of high school, including one from Buffalo in February 2022 when current Alabama defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist was the Bulls’ head coach.

Howard is Alabama’s third transfer portal addition of the spring, joining kicker Graham Nicholson (Miami-Ohio) and returning offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor. Alabama has lost two players to the portal during the spring window (April 16-30) in center James Brockermeyer (TCU) and defensive lineman Khurtiss Perry.

Alabama’s safety position was led this spring by fifth-year senior Malachi Moore and junior Keon Sabb, with fourth-year junior DeVonta Smith and freshman Red Morgan competing for the Husky role as the fifth defensive back. The Tide’s backup safeties this spring were sophomores Bray Hubbard and Tony Mitchell, and freshmen Peyton Woodyard and Dre Kirkpatrick Jr.

Howard should provide depth at safety while contributing on special teams. Defensive back was an area of need for Alabama from a numbers standpoint this spring, coach Kalen DeBoer said.

“I love the guys that we have,” DeBoer said earlier this month on The Next Round. “I’m very confident. Malachi, Keon and Red have done an amazing job. DeVonta at the Husky position, too. Those guys did a great job. It’s not even about that. It’s just about bringing in some guys that can help our program, help our team be better, give us some depth and with special teams. You’d love to have some guys that can continue to come up through the program and develop.”
