DONE DEAL: Rob McElhenney names two NFL stars who will join Wrexham in few days coming

It comes after the NFL legend made some misinformed comments about Welsh people

NFL star Jason Kelce says he’s a ‘big Wales guy’ after being invited to Wrexham by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The Philadelphia Eagles legend made headlines last month for comments he made about Welsh people while discussing former rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit’s move to the Kansas City Chiefs with his brother Travis.

On the brothers’ New Heights podcast, he said: “When I think of Welsh, I think British people call it ‘posh’. I think of these rich, upper class, just beautiful white people. [Rees-Zammit] is the running stereotype of what I would think of with a Welsh person.”

But after being called out for those comments by Welsh listeners, he conceded that he had been “very incorrect” in his impression of Wales. However, he went on to say that he was “happy to be incredibly wrong” as “the Welsh seem exactly like my kind of people”.

That retraction led Wrexham co-owner McElhenney to invite him to Wales, as he wrote: “Yes, incredibly wrong. I should show you around someday. I might know a few people. See for yourself.”

Now, it looks as though that visit will actually happen, with McElhenney claiming that both of the Kelce brothers are coming over to watch a Wrexham game in the near future. His and Reynolds’ big plan, however, is to “lure” Travis’ girlfriend, Taylor Swift, to the Racecourse Ground.

Appearing on the Dan Patrick Show ahead of the release of the third season of their Welcome to Wrexham documentary, the actors were asked if they could get the ‘Shake It Off’ singer to make an appearance at a match, to which Reynolds replied. “That would be a coup. I would love that actually.”

McElhenney added: “I know for sure the Kelce brothers are coming out to a game, so it’s just a matter of time,” before Reynolds continued: “See, that’s our back door plan. That’s how you lure the Queen Bee.”

Kelce appeared to confirm he would be heading over to Wrexham, as he shared a clip of the interview on X and told his 587,000 followers: “I’m a big Wales guy, place is the best!”

If the Kelce brothers, and indeed Taylor Swift, do make it to the Racecourse Ground, they will follow a string of A-list celebrities who have experienced Wrexham for themselves since the club’s Hollywood takeover in 2021. The likes of Hugh Jackman and McElhenney’s Always Sunny… co-stars Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton have attended games, while Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd both popped into the now-famous The Turf pub for a pint on their matchday visits.

It comes after the two NFL stars said former Wales wing Rees-Zammit was in for a “humbling experience” after signing a three-year deal with the Chiefs, but had the potential to “take the world by storm” and potentially become the most marketable player in the history of the sport.

“It’s going to be a humbling experience at first,” said Travis, who contacted the Welshman after his signing was announced. “It’s not easy to just make that jump, they’re two completely different games. He is an athlete and that’s what the Chiefs saw. He’s a smart kid, a smart player. So he’s gonna be able to pick up the offense eventually.

“But it’s gonna be a tough few months for him here while he’s getting acclimated to the NFL. We’ve been doing this since we were kids, so we’re gonna have those little instincts that we’ve built over the years that he’s got to catch up with.”

Meanwhile, Jason added: “I’m excited to see what this guy does. I know it’s gonna be a learning curve, but I hope this guy takes the world by f***ing storm. It will be electric. With a smile like that, this guy, if he works out, he’s going to be the most marketable player of all time.”
