BREAKING NEWS: Alabama true freshman DB Peyton Woodyard enters transfer portal

The same day Alabama football bolstered its secondary through the transfer portal, it will reportedly lose a member of that group. According to multiple reports, first from On3, true freshman defensive back Peyton Woodyard has entered the transfer portal.

Woodyard was part of Alabama’s 2024 recruiting class, committing when Nick Saban was still the coach of the Crimson Tide. He enrolled early, joining UA for practice ahead of its appearance in the College Football Playoff’s Rose Bowl semifinal.

According to On3, Woodyard entered the portal with a do not contact tag, suggesting he could already have a next destination in mind. He initially chose Alabama over offers from Georgia, Ohio State and Southern Cal, among others.

The 6-foot-2, 188-pound defensive back was a four-star prospect out of St. John Bosco in California, and was committed to Georgia before flipping. The 247Sports composite ratings ranked him as the No. 9 safety in the 2024 class.

The move to enter the portal came after Alabama scored a commitment from a transfer safety earlier on Monday. Kameron Howard, who has three years of eligibility remaining, joined up after previously playing at Charlotte.

The defensive back position is one Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer said the Crimson Tide was planning to target during the spring portal window.

“We’re probably a guy short or so,” DeBoer said during spring practice. “Offensive line (also), we’re probably a guy short. Just from the numbers that you typically would see and also where we want to be. So not saying we’ll take a look and evaluate, and you never know.”

Alabama undergraduate players can enter the portal through Tuesday. Transfer players can still be signed after the window closes.
